Do it hair-self

Here are a few pictures, that i saw a while ago that inspired me to create my own hair accessories. The best thing about doing it yourself is that you can make it exactly the way you want and it is most of the time a way better quality and it is also cheaper.

My own pictures are of course not as good as the professional one, but they’re just here to show, that you can do it. Hair accessories can really complete an outfit and they won’t bother you as much as neclaces or huge earrings, so it is something you want to keep in mind.hair accessories

Anna May Wong is heartbreakingly beautiful

annamaywong1

Care of Wiki:

Anna May Wong (January 3, 1905 – February 2, 1961) was an American actress, the first Chinese American movie star, and the first Asian American to become an international star. Her long and varied career spanned both silent and sound film, television, stage, and radio.

Born near the Chinatown neighborhood of Los Angeles to second-generation Chinese-American parents, Wong became infatuated with the movies and began acting in films at an early age. During the silent film era, she acted in The Toll of the Sea (1922), one of the first movies made in color and Douglas Fairbanks’ The Thief of Bagdad (1924). Wong became a fashion icon, and by 1924 had achieved international stardom.

Frustrated by the stereotypical supporting roles she reluctantly played in Hollywood, she left for Europe in the late 1920s, where she starred in several notable plays and films, among them Piccadilly (1929).

She spent the first half of the 1930s traveling between the United States and Europe for film and stage work. Wong was featured in films of the early sound era, such as Daughter of the Dragon (1931) and Daughter of Shanghai (1937), and with Marlene Dietrich in Josef von Sternberg’s Shanghai Express (1932).

In 1935 Wong was dealt the most severe disappointment of her career, when Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer refused to consider her for the leading role in its film version of Pearl S. Buck’s The Good Earth, choosing instead the European Luise Rainer to play the leading role in “yellowface”. Wong spent the next year touring China, visiting her family’s ancestral village and studying Chinese culture. In the late 1930s, she starred in several B movies for Paramount Pictures, portraying Chinese-Americans in a positive light. She paid less attention to her film career during World War II, when she devoted her time and money to helping the Chinese cause against Japan. Wong returned to the public eye in the 1950s in several television appearances as well as her own series in 1951, The Gallery of Madame Liu-Tsong, the first U.S. television show starring an Asian-American. She had been planning to return to film in Flower Drum Song when she died in 1961, at the age of only 56.

Swing Era Retouching – Yes, They Did It Back Then Too

crawford-unretouched

crawford-retouched

Much like any fashion photograph today, Joan Crawford got the swing era equivalent of today’s digital airbrushing. Bye bye freckles, wrinkles, dark circles and brow furrows! The difference? This retouching was all done painstakingly by hand, and took around 6 hours. Click here to read more about Hollywood photographer-to-the-stars George Hurrell.

Benjamin Bixby Spring 2009 Collection

bejamin-bixby-spring-2009-102908-3

As promised, here are some of the pieces from the new Spring 2009 collection of the Benjamin Bixby label, belonging to Outkast’s Andre Benjamin (a.k.a. Andre 3000). Much less preppy than the first collection, but still with a tailored retro edge that we love.

Grey Gardens (2009)

Grey Gardens starring Drew Barrymore as “Little” Edith Bouvier Beale and Jessica Lange as “Big” Edith Bouvier Beale was such a touching and bittersweet film; capturing the essence behind the 1975 documentary. Costume designer Cat Thomas had to span the 1920′s through the 1970′s and did so with a harmonious and humorous eye. Trying to dress characters that were based on true eccentrics~ without turning them in to caricatures~ is crucial not only to believability, but to building a relationship between the character herself and the viewer.

Alexander McQueen Mens F/W 08/09

Alexander McQueen’s menswear collection for fall/winter 08/09 is stupid-fresh; it’s amazing! It’s  a Tim Burton meets fashion, Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde, and Sweeny Todd all rolled into one. I absolutely dig it. Men, take note! Mostly likely you won’t want to throw down that kind of money for your threads, but see if you can find something that looks like something from these pictures. And ladies, see if you can get your men in some of this!!

Star Trek’s Zoë Saldana keeps going where no woman has gone before. Coming down to earth after filming James Cameron’s Avatar, she channels the glamour of the Harlem Renaissance for photographer Michael Roberts.

Benjamin Bixby Fall 08/Spring 09 Collection

02bixby1-650

Since Idlewild, Outkast’s Andre 3000 has been on the SwingFashionista radar. In 2008, Andre Benjamin, a.k.a. Andre 3000 launched his own fashion line Benjamin Bixby with this Fall 08/09 collection. The label is available at Harrods in London and Barneys New York.  In his own words:

“Benjamin Bixby is my muse. My collection is based on a fictional character. The Bixby range came from me seeing old pictures and documentaries of American college-football players in 1935. On the field they played this rough game, yet off the field they’d be dressed really nicely – I thought that was a cool pairing. I thought they were making a statement.”

And from hypebeast: “Undoubtedly one of the most unique and creative intellectuals in the music scene, Outkast’s Andre 3000 has always been known for his eclectic style whether with music or fashion. Allowing his clothing line to do the talking, Benjamin Bixby thrives, takes inspiration from 1930’s vintage athletic garments creating a refined classic Americana look. The line’s tailored resemblance reflects old-world craftsmanship with an emphasis on vintage, collegiate pieces.”

A new Spring 2009 collection is actually out, so I’ll post up some pics of that soon. In the meantime, here is Fall 08-09…

Men’s Vintage Looks in The Aviator (2004)

theaviator

Leonardo Di Caprio (playing Howard Hughes), Jude Law (playing Errol Flynn), John C. Reilley and Alec Baldwin all get the vintage treatment in The Aviator. Slicked hair, red carpet-worthy tuxedos, 1940s suits and of course, plenty of leather aviator jackets.
