As usual, fun and funky from Betsey Johnson. The Spring 2010 ready-to-wear collection has a 1950s twist, with above-the-knee poodle skirts and plenty of crinolines in girly colors… I can see Jo (card-carrying Betsey Johnson fan) rocking all these numbers:
Categories: On CatwalksI am a huge fan of Gwen Sephani, especially when it comes to her fashion choices. Do you remember this picture of her from the Billboard Music Awards?

Fabulous, fabulous, fabulous! Well, you’ll be pleased to know the someone has bothered to break down how to do this hairstyle! Over at Bobby Pin Blog, Lauren takes you through step-by-step on how to achieve this look. Here’s a little preview (in case you haven’t already clicked over to the post!)

The sections of the style are asymmetric. One side of the top section is parted above the outer eyebrow. The other side of the top section parts starting at the hairline about an inch above the ear. Clip this out of the way.

Take all of the rest of the hair and create a French twist. The ends are not tucked in above the twist at this point. I am actually going to use the ends to help create some stamina for the pompadour. This doll has a decent amount of hair, so if you have fine hair, a rat may help you here.

For more detailed instructions on hair basics such as curling and setting, check out Vintage Hairstyling: Retro Styles with Step-by-Step Techniques. I have the book and I love it. If you have questions about the book, click the link above and check it out or ask me a question and I’ll do my best to answer.
Categories: Celebrities, Hair, How ToWhat a great looking show! The fabrics are gorgeous and I adore the backdrop! Not too sure about the enormous hair, but it certainly frames the clothing.

I want that sweater!
Categories: On CatwalksPerhaps not so overtly retro as the last collection I posted up here, but nonetheless, a lot of feminine, vintage touches in a palette of creams, violets and dusky fall colors.
Click here to see my picks from the Spring/Summer 2009 collection, which had more of a 1920s feel…

Trevira wrote a post about Mr Casani here. You might not realize it, but you’ve probably seen him before!
August 4, 1938. Washington, D.C. “Miss Dorothy Parker has been selected as Miss Washington and will compete for the title of Miss America at the Atlantic City beauty pageant to be held during Labor Day week. 18 Years old, she weighs 112 pounds and is 5 feet, 4 inches in height. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. C. Albert Parker of Washington.” Harris & Ewing glass negative. View full size.

Inspired by Dick Tracy era, Beckham illustrated that the new silhouette was still as much about structure as ever–but featured a slightly looser silhouette and drape. The contrast of light and dark and feminine and masculine were underlying motifs as she softened the shoulders while, for evening, went more daring with raw edges and asymmetric collars.

Rich neutrals set the groundwork for the lineup, peppered with such current colors as sanguine, emerald, graphite and antique gold. “Nerdy chic,” she explained of a series of draped crepe dresses. “That’s where my personal style is at.” Clever details peppered throughout included a classic grosgrain belt partially hidden as a corset to keep the waist solid or cut outs placed delicately under the arms just so.
A Forties-inspired rib jersey/wool twill drape skirt dress elegantly balanced the tension between top and bottom beautifully while a “little cloud dress” hand tacked and cut on a bias was a fine example of Beckham’s relentless pursuit of perfection.

And here’s an oldie, but a goodie. I just HAD to include it!
The 1940s were the inspiration behind the Carolina Herrera Fall 2008 collection, and no woman was fully dressed without a proper hat back then. The highly sculptural felt numbers were perfectly perched atop the models’ soft waves.
Categories: Clothing, On CatwalksI’ll admit it. I love Tina Fey! She’s adorable. Just look at her in these cute little tap shorts and long gloves!!

Categories: CelebritiesSean Combs/Diddy has appeared in Vogue’s February 2010 issue alongside supermodel Natalia Vodianova in an editorial entitled Brief Encounter, shot by Annie Leibovitz and styled by Grace Coddington. Natalia and Diddy were outfitted by the likes of Tom Ford, Ralph Lauren, Salvatore Ferragamo, Christian Louboutin, Louis Vuitton and Christian Dior. Read the full article from Vogue here.
Diddy’s next studio album, due out in April, is entitled Last Train To Paris. Coincidence?

Hot Ticket
With a mood of gathering mystery—and clothes with a mid-century-movieland mystique—the romance is set for departure. Chanel tweed suit dress. Ralph Lauren Blue Label trench (on suitcase). Christian Louboutin slingbacks. On Diddy: Tom Ford coat and suit. Ermenegildo Zegna tie. Shot at New Jersey Transit Hoboken Station.

Strangers on a Train
The couple trade glances. Her look has all the hallmarks of MGM-siren glamour: pencil skirt (check!), narrow belt (check!), Lana Turner sweater (check!). Rochas silk sweater, skirt , and belt.

The Express Track
“Is this seat taken?” and “I’m traveling alone”—before the next station, an unexpected exchange of confidences. Giambattista Valli short-sleeved gray jacket and matching skirt. Hermès bag.

An Affair to Remember
Narrow corridors and incendiary screen chemistry lead speedily to first-class sleeping compartments. She’s dressed for a private party in soft-pink washed satin. Nina Ricci dress. On Diddy: Salvatore Ferragamo shirt. Louis Vuitton trousers.

Steamy
Looking absolutely like a World War II heroine—Greer Garson, say—Natalia clings to her star-crossed lover. Christian Dior pale-pink silk-crepe belted jacket with front peplum and tulip skirt. Nina Ricci leather ankle boots.

I’ll Be Seeing You
In the closing shot, she wears a trench coat - icon of tearful cinematic goodbyes since Bogie said, “Here’s looking at you, kid,” to Ingrid Bergman in Casablanca. Nina Ricci cotton trench.

I’m a sucker for a great collaborative project, so, having long been a fan of Manhattan’s Neue Galerie dedicated to early twentieth-century German and Austrian art and design, I was over the moon when I got word that Estée Lauder had created two limited-edition Bauhaus-inspired products centered around the work of artist Otto Dix–a crimson lipstick called Berlin Red and a complementary compact–whose exhibit will debut at the museum in March. As a refresher, the Neue Galerie was co-founded by Ronald S. Lauder (of the namesake beauty giant), so it was just a matter of time before his two passions would meld. Some of Dix’s most noted works, including Portrait of the Dancer Anita Berber (1925) and reclining Woman on Leopard Skin (1927) center around female figures with bold red lips, so the choice of the crimson pigment (housed in a bullet-shaped case) was au natural. The lipstick and compact will be sold exclusively in the museum’s design shop. If these beauty products aren’t enough to get you uptown, hopefully Dix’s exhibit–the first-ever one-man show on American soil devoted to the German artist–will.
Lipstick ($30) and compact ($55) available at Neue Galerie, 212-628-6200
Man Snob has great taste in lipstick and an eye for design. I think the compact and lipstick are beautifully designed.

“Tally ho Dior!
Equestrian chic was the big news in Christian Dior’s spring haute couture show Monday afternoon, Jan. 25, in Paris, where the house’s couturier John Galliano looked to find ladies who hunted, rather than lunched.
Specifically, Galliano referenced the late 19th century women who inspired Charles James, the neo-classical American designer whose more extravagant shapes also inspired Monsieur Christian Dior himself when he developed the 1947 New Look show, one of the most influential collections ever made.”
