Well, if you are Downton Abbey fan, you will no doubt have watched the series 3 Xmas Special by now (as I have), and I won’t give away any spoilers re the storyline here. BUT, I will however share some of the delightful 1920s fashions. I think that Lady Edith sported the best garb in this ep, along with an amazing cocoon coat worn by Lady Grantham.

Great article I found on the website about high-end fashion in the 20s. The cost of $346 in 1926 is equivalent to $4,414 today!! Clara Bow is the model here.

For all my 1940s loving friends…I have been scanning some of the great ads in vintage magazines that I own and thought I would share them as some of the shoes are simply stunning. Most of the pics are featured in a mid 40s Sears and Roebuck catalogue and the other is from the 1943 British magazine – Britannia. I love the Specators and the ‘Kumfees’. Great name

Hi all, I have been very busy putting more items into my Etsy store – – so I hope you will all go in and take a gander at the 35 or so new things I have added, including some more 40s dresses, 40s tailored jackets, vintage sewing patterns and magazines, lots of vintage hats (30s to 50s), mens 40s suspenders, hair clips and bobby pin cards from the 30s, 40s and 50s and some lovely scarves. I have always loved these gorgeous ads from 1930s Japan. Such stylised, beautiful ladies and a wonderful use of colour and design. The girl with the red hair bow is stunning and I adore the green hat in the second poster.
So, I thought I would do something fun and write a regular post every 2 weeks that focuses on a particular colour. I will also include pics showing all sorts of vintage fashion items that were produced in varying shades of that colour, hopefully to inspire some new outfit combinations in the future and some possible purchases.
Black and white: Yes, I’m generally a fan of darker colours like black and navy, so I’ve always been a fan of 1930s Coco Chanel. Even her home was decorated in black white tones, which at the time, was quite daring. Schiaparelli also used black and white very well in some of her clothing lines. Anyhoo, I love the contrast of black and white garments and the streamlining they give the body. Here are some lovely examples that I have found.
As always, moving house means that you must sort, pack, then un-pack all of your worldly goods. Sometimes you come across items that you haven’s seen for a while, as I did with my precious ‘Delineater’ magazines from the 20s and 30s. It was with glee that found a group of 4 many years ago in a tiny out of town antique store, and I love them to bits, but I had carefully stored them away and had almost forgotten I had them!
As a designer, I adore Delineator cover art in all it’s elegant art deco simplicity and the wonderful fashions portrayed, so I thought I’d go on a hunt for some more online. For those unfamiliar to the magazine, Delineator (A Journal of Fashion, Culture, and Fine Arts) was launched in 1873 by Ebenezer Butterick – yes, that Butterick. In the early 20s, the magazine published the work of romance novelists and many famous illustrators worked on staff. The magazine later merged with William Randolph Hearst’s Pictorial Review in 1937.
The Delineator was originally a magazine of women’s fashion, with dressmakers patterns, as well as articles covering women’s issues, women in sport and in cultural life. In 1920, it hosted ‘more advertising than was ever inserted in any magazine published for women at any time, anywhere’, thanks to it’s 1 million readers and I believe it was published in many languages. Well, 4 of them found their way to a little store in country town Australia … so there you are!

With a closeup showing a love of striped socks. In the day it was a way young men could express themselves in a society where rules on how to dress were still in place. Sometimes in the UK they were made in the school colours.
Not a bare head in sight, even during the dark times of the Depression, men still took pride in the way they dressed on a daily basis.

Red: So many shades and varities. Crimson, fire-engine, scarlet, vermillion, cardinal, blood-red and the list goes on. I chose red today because it is a courageous colour and I have needed a lot of that in the last few days. I usually wear red when I am feeling confident and happy. Here are some amazing examples of red vintage/vintage inspired items. How gorgeous are the 30′s bias gowns – stunning! The black and red cloche is also breathtaking.

Teal: A lovely medium blue-green that reminds me of the sea off the islands of Perth and Thailand, cooler weather and rainy nights. As with my previous yellow post, I was inspired this week by a 1940s crepe, beaded gown that I have in my collection in a magnificent teal colour. Here are some beauties in various shades of teal. I think my favourite is the 1920s French opera coat…stunning.

I have been meaning to post this little 2 strip Technicolour film for a while now. It is quite amazing and seeing late 20s clothing and hats in all their coloured glory is mesmerising. I think my favourite hat is the black and white cloche and I love the green crepe ensemble.
You will notice that some of skirts are just slightly above knee. Contrary to what a lot of people think, these shorter lengths were generally only in vogue for a short period of time during the 1920s, from around late 1926 to 1928 and this quite often assists with dating a photo or piece of film. Hemlines soon plunged below the knee again in the early 1930s. Many thanks to on YouTube for uploading this.

After looking over it I realised that I actually have more than half of these items in my own collection! I have used the water wavers quite often (my profile pic is a water wave set) and my rather substantial box of vintage hair doo-dads contains Curly Lox Curlers, Wide Wide Curlers, Kurly Kews, WW combs, Kurl Kuiks, Wavos and Kid Kurlers.
It’s also fun to see the original prices and descriptions of these items. The Baldwin Marcellers are amazing! I’ve seen some online for sale on occasion and they look rather complex to use! And the Nayrs Waving Cap, what a nifty looking device. Wish I could find an old one of those and give it try! Oh blow me down! There’s one for sale at

Yellow: I chose yellow today because I was inpsired by a superb pale buttery yellow, early 1940s dress in my collection, and funnily enough – a 40s handbag to match. Not a colour I would probably wear myself, but lovely nontheless.
In my mind, yellow clothing always screams warm weather and sunny days. So, since it is summer here in Perth, a yellow gathering of items it will be for this post And oh so many shades…from canary and lemon to mustard, pale yellow and daffodil! Have also included one modern item in this group…but it is very worthy of being here
