1930s Men’s fashion snap shots: 1

Everyday men of the 1930s. Such wonderful shots of men relaxing, going about their everyday business and hanging out with friends. Even the casual clothing of the day never looks just ‘thrown together’. The various pieces of each ensemble always appear to be chosen with care. I LOVE the third pic from the top.  Those chaps look like they are having a ball! Thanks to The Sartorialist for the last 4 pics.

Vintage colour swatch…burgundy beauties

So, I thought I would do something fun and start writing a regular post every 2 weeks that focuses on a particular colour. I will also include pics showing all sorts of vintage fashion items that were produced in varying shades of that colour, hopefully to inspire some new outfit combinations in the future. :)

Burgundy. It’s rich, dark, sensual and one of my favourite clothing colours, along with darker greens, browns, rusts, reds, black and navy. I’m not much of ‘bright colour’ girl (much to my father’s disgust…he always comments that I ‘wear too much black’) and I tend to accessorise with brighter pieces or wear a bright shirt with darker skirt/trousers etc. Burgundy usually screams winter and autumn to me but I do have items in cottons and linens in lighter shades and funnily enough; a pair of vintage suede burgundy lace up oxford shoes! Hope you enjoy this collection.

Fine & Dandy Shop 2009 Lookbook

Just came across this buried in a folder on my desktop. I had set these aside to post a long while ago. The store is fineanddandyshop.com, oh so dandy. Their tag line is “Accessories for Dapper Guys”. Send me a boy that looks like this! I guess I am moving to London in January, maybe my chances will improve…

John Galliano Spring 2011 Menswear

John Galliano chooses theme after theme for his menswear collections that I love love love! Fall 2006 was aviation, Spring 2006 had New Orleans and jazzmen, and now for Spring 2011 it was epic show themed on silent movie stars like Charlie Chaplin and Harold Lloyd. Look at this!

Watch the full show, it’s a fabulous spectacle:

New Aris Allen oxford wingtips in white

Aris Allen have finally added a new mens shoe to their existing line. As dancers have seen, the white captoe is so very popular with male swing dancers the world over but I know a few guys  who have long wanted to see an all white shoe in a wingtip style  - and now here it is.

You can find them here www.dancestore.com/Aris-Allen-Mens-All-White-Wingtip-Oxford-Swing-Shoes/productinfo/140-WH/

Necks Tuesday…fine bow ties

I ran across an article about the vendors at the Jazz Age Lawn Party on Governor’s Island and found a write up about Necks Tuesday. What a great name for a tie store!! Necks Tuesday are a New York maker of hand finished bow ties which come in silk, fine wools, cotton and cashmere and have a very sharp vintage look, unlike many modern bow ties.

I also like the fact that they are not too loud and come in more muted shades, which allows them to be worn with most of the suit and shirt colours you find in a modern man’s wardrobe. Great to see some nice vintage repro being made for men. Here are some of the ties available.

You can find them at http://neckstuesday.com/

Book: “Cary Grant: A Celebration of Style”

Cary Grant

A divine book about a divine style icon, not just for the photos of Cary Grant in all his splendor, but a wonderful read as well. What a way to express fashion and style:

I’m talking about style, not only in the sense of how he wore his Savile Row suits, but style as a revelation of character, as a way of facing the world, a means by which all of life’s riches are embraced and celebrated.

Anderson & Sheppard of Savile Row

This is the Savile Row bespoke tailor that dressed the likes of Fred Astaire, Rudolph Valentino, Charlie Chaplin, Noel Coward, Sir Laurence Olivier and Duke Ellington. They recently celebrated their 100th anniversary, and over their century of dressing the British upper-class and the American movie star, have managed to maintain their classic elegance like good British chaps. If you happen to be in London, do visit… if you can gather enough pomp to walk through those doors.

Shopping in Korea

I snapped these pics of some cute clothes while Juan and I were shopping in Seoul (yep, I’m in Korea right now)… shopping at 4.30am! Yes, 24 hour shopping here! We went to the dance, then we had dinner, then we went shopping!! I love this place.

Most of the clothing in these huge department stores are no brand in particular – or should I say, knock-off brands, I imagine. But the snaps of the men’s clothes here were from a stall labelled Great Gatsby, a Korean brand.

‘Beautifully Made’ in Rake Magazine

Here is an editorial entitled “Beautifully Made”, shot by photographer Derrick Santini in Tuscany, for Rake Magazine. The magazine’s bi-line is “The Modern Voice of Classic Men’s Elegance,” sounds good to me! They have a few articles archived on the website. Here are a few that swing lads might be interested in:

Sharp Suits Through the Ages

Sharp suits never go out of style. Here are some leading men that make suits look GOOD!

The 1940s Suit
On either side of the Atlantic, under the wartime clothing restrictions, the turn-ups or cuffs would not have been allowed. Nor would the flaps on the pockets. Still, it’s a superb example of how good a Donegal tweed can look.

Sean Connery
Let’s hear it for Anthony Sinclair, the London tailor who created the Bond look in the early days. Sinclair was the tailor of Terence Young, who directed the first, second, and fourth James Bond movies (Dr. No, From Russia With Love, and Thunderball). Young decided that Sean Connery needed a bit of help to look cool.

Three-Piece Checked Suits

Hector Powe was one of the smaller British “multiple tailors”—retailers with a national chain of shops—but it still offered stylish 3-piece suits in 1964. Personally I love the suit on the right.

Don Figueroa
This Spanish aristocrat, Don Jaime de Mesia Figueroa, was photographed in about 1967 by Patrick, Lord Lichfield, a cousin of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. It takes some style to carry off this eight-button double-breasted suit.
