Trend Spotting: Lonestar Championships

coloredkeds

Got a pair of colored Keds? There was a rainbow of Keds on display at this year’s Lonestar Championships in Austin, Texas (which, by the way, is a fab dance-hard weekend!)

wf31251 wf34029

You can get pretty much any color these days, or you can custom design your Keds at Zazzle.com. Cheap, cheerful, a good jack-of-all-trades dance sole (not too sticky, not too slick). Hmm, when I think of colored Keds I think of uber-cute Jeremy Otth from LA (left), or of Alain & Marie at last year’s ILHC, rockin’ out those matching yellow Keds (right)…

Betsey Johnson Shoes on Overstock

The other day I was looking all over the web for a winter coat (read about it here) and while on Overstock I stumbled upon some gorgeous Betsey Johnson shoes. I’ve been having a secret love affair with Betsey for the past two year and I can’t seem to get her out of my head. Luckily, she’s pricey enough that I can only splurge on some of her goodies every once and a while.

Some shoes that tickle my fancy:

Betsey Johnson Lefty Brown ($116.47)Betsey Johnson Lefty Brown

Betsey Johnson Kipp Black/Fusian Satin ($97.05)Betsey Johnson Kipp Black/Fuchsia Satin
Betsey Johnson Adair Black Snake ($142.45)

Shoes on Amazon.com

So, you will have noticed the new Best of Swing & Vintage on Amazon banner in the sidebar, and this is what I’ve been procrastinating with the last week, what fun! I’ve set up my very own Amazon store, with all – well the name says it all really – the best of swing and vintage to be found on Amazon.com.  It’s so fun, like curating your own collection. Anyway, the best thing though is the shoes! I mean, we all think of Amazon for books, CDs, DVDs, but I had no idea there were so many shoes!! There’s loads of styles, but for example, here’s some of my favorite granny heels:

ALDO Miriello - Clearance Heels Women's Shoes  Miz Mooz Women's Rimini T-Strap Pump
Sofft "Gallery" Mary Jane Pump Sofft "Oriole" Pump
Sofft "Fiona" Mary Jane Pump Nine West Women's Ambelu Pump

Yeah, on Amazon! Who would of thought….

Cute Double Strap Scalloped Mary Janes at Plasticland

p90521912

Check out these adorable cheapies: just $49.00!  Not leather, so they might not be the best for swing dancing, but damn cute for strutting about in (and that makes them vegan shoes!). Website says “made of a slightly distressed (crinkly) black and taupe leather-look vinyl, they feature rounded toes, unique easy-to-use hook-on double straps, and thick stacked wood 2 1/2″ heels. Fit true to size, medium width.”

Get them here: www.shopplasticland.com

Actually, they have a bunch of cute shoes that Swing Fashionistas might like, all for less than $50:

1944 Platform Shoes & Purse

08_p95-107_400w

Check out these beauties at the Bata Shoe Museum. The website reads:

“These shoes and their matching handbag were purchased at Owens and Elmes in Toronto in 1944 and complimented the appearance of a fortunate woman from Hamilton, Ontario. The shoes would most truthfully be described as peep-toe, platform sling-backs, but they are part of the larger genre known as “platforms”. The open toes and straps of these shoes are a refined response to the sandal trend of the 1930s, the first time that women in the 20th century could show glimpses of their bare feet. Evening sandals were introduced in the late ‘30s once daytime sandals became fashionable as families across the continent flocked to beaches for affordable holidays.

The platform under the ball of the foot and the heel are made from wood, the shoes are covered in a green fabric that is meant to look like suede and they’re trimmed with snakeskin. None of these materials were on the European or North American war-time ration lists, which included among other materials, petroleum, leather, rubber and silk. This list of rationed materials strained the resources of the shoemaking industry because it left very few materials for production. This difficulty was embraced as a challenge by innovative shoemakers and these shoes are a good example of the quirky fashion of the ‘40s which focussed more on the creation of the image of women “making do” and “taking care” of the home front, rather than the sexy glamour of the preceding 1930s.”

Shoes with Spats & Gaiters

Isabella's Shoes with Spats by Juliet Juliet

I snapped a photo of this pair of sexy black heels with spats, from Isabella Gregorio’s personal collection in Como, Italy this weekend. Ssshh, don’t tell her!   The label reads “Juliet Juliet”. Spats or gaiters (which are usually longer), cover the instep and ankle, and are usually detachable from your shoes. They were fashionable for gentlemen in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, and have worked their way back into modern ladies shoe design in the last few seasons.

Want more spats? The first pair below are Prada 2008 Collection, the second are L.A.M.B.

And here we have individual ‘Gaiterettes’ from LesFrivolities at Etsy.com:

You wear these over shoes or ankle boots that you already own. Prices range from $55.00 to $155.00 per handmade pair.

Katie Anderson (LA)

Katie Anderson's Shoes & Stockings Katie Anderson's Shoes & Stockings Front

Katie Anderson (USA) busted out these studded Top Shop shoes with those gorgeous floral patterned stockings, in Como Italy on the weekend for Swing Crash Festival 2009. Everyone was asking, “Are those tattoos?”  Incidentally, when not globetrotting with Minn Vo as a Lindy Hop instructor, Katie is a shoe designer in LA.

Katie also showed up in some pretty gorgeous head gear over the weekend, including this giant black satin bow mounted on an alice band (Forever 21), which she had pinned down to look like a vintage hat, and a red velvet rose set against her platinum blonde hair. Fantastico!
