Classic elegance in the Bibhu Mohapatra Fall 2010 collection. Real art deco feel with the bold lines and shapes, and I’m a sucker for a mixture of textures – furs, tweeds, chiffon, satin, velvet, leather. Beautifully shot as well…
My favorites from the Hermes Fall 2010 ready-to-wear show. Plenty of lady fops and dandies, with leather replacing tweeds in a mildly fetish twist. Like British super-heroines in some post-apocalyptic London… very Avengers. These women clearly need to be driving this car. Animal print umbrellas, pocket watches, leather gloves, bowler hats and netting veils, what’s not to like?
With Marc Jacobs (*swoon*) at the helm, the Louis Vuitton Fall 2010 ready-to-wear show was all about an unabashedly vintage silhouette. Balconette bosoms, wasp waists, lined 50s circle skirts, sweater girls, fur collars, bows, long gloves and clutches. Also so nice to see a retro-inspired collection trotted down the catwalk, without terrifying abstract makeup or surrealist hair, to ‘balance out the old-fashioned’. Of course, I would have preferred red lippie and pincurls, but the preppy ponytails and fresh-faced ingenue makeup is a welcome relief after some of the absurdist hair, makeup (and shoes) of the season. My favorites from The Elie Saab Fall 2010 ready-to-wear show. Gathering and drapery in all the right places, a classic palette of black, charcoal and maroon,with splashes of black lace and fur thrown in. Very glamorous. And then there’s those sequinned gowns – oh god! Breathtaking, and those unusual cuts remind me of Wentworth gowns from the 1920s, and of this gown that Virgina Mayo wears while singing Daddy-O in A Song Is Born (1947).

What a great looking show! The fabrics are gorgeous and I adore the backdrop! Not too sure about the enormous hair, but it certainly frames the clothing.
I want that sweater!
Inspired by Dick Tracy era, Beckham illustrated that the new silhouette was still as much about structure as ever–but featured a slightly looser silhouette and drape. The contrast of light and dark and feminine and masculine were underlying motifs as she softened the shoulders while, for evening, went more daring with raw edges and asymmetric collars.
Rich neutrals set the groundwork for the lineup, peppered with such current colors as sanguine, emerald, graphite and antique gold. “Nerdy chic,” she explained of a series of draped crepe dresses. “That’s where my personal style is at.” Clever details peppered throughout included a classic grosgrain belt partially hidden as a corset to keep the waist solid or cut outs placed delicately under the arms just so.
A Forties-inspired rib jersey/wool twill drape skirt dress elegantly balanced the tension between top and bottom beautifully while a “little cloud dress” hand tacked and cut on a bias was a fine example of Beckham’s relentless pursuit of perfection.
John Galliano has quite the imagination. His recent show for Paris Fashion Week dawned finger waves, corsets and some breathtaking suits.
