she said ” ‘A girl has to have a few pairs of sensible shoes amongst the Louboutins, so I go for classics, with faithful ’40s style wedges. These were especially made for us early 90s swing dancers, so they have various styles, from non-slip sticky soles to smooth sliding classic leather soles in a variety of colours and styles.’
i had NO idea she was a swing dancer too. EARLY 90s – that’s old school from my Class of ’97 perch… ๐
Oh yeah! I met her backstage at a festival in Italy where we were both working (a retro festival called Summer Jamboree) – she was the headliner along with Jerry Lee Lewis, and I was just teaching swing dance classes for the festival hahaha). Anyway, I saw her have a dance with Marcus Koch, who knew her in LA back in the early 90s. She was cute, although she was wearing ridiculously high heels, so she danced fairly delicately (touch step touch step…). I have trouble imagining her swinging out hard – what do you think? The LA crew have some Dita stories from back in the day, ask around! PS: like all celebrities, she is tiny. She was wearing some Louboutin pumps, probably 4 inch heels, and she still barely cleared my shoulder. I would say 5″3 or something like that!
very sexy (and beautiful!) but i don’t like how her feet look in those heels. :/
wow! i remember taking classes from marcus and barbl! i don’t remember him being short… so dita and marcus must’ve made an interesting couple to watch regardless of what she was wearing… ๐
sadly, i don’t know too many LA folks from back then – i was besotted with savoy style and SF. i only danced in LA twice (i don’t consider catalina part of LA) for the first battle of the bands and at the derby where eric and sylvia were teaching… ben stiller, who is also freakishly height challenged, was also there taking a lesson. now THAT would’ve made an interesting lead/follow combo. ๐
Thanks so much for posting this. I love Dita but this was only in the US Instyle (I’m in England). If the UK Instyle prints the story, I’ll buy it too!
i just recently read another interview with Dita about her shopping at vintage fairs:
