New multi-sized 1930s pattern from EvaDress

This new addition to the EvaDress catalogue is a gorgeous 1930s gown and it is available in multi-size. Lovely simple lines and I adore the sleeves. I’ll have to add it to my sewing list!

Delineator magazines of the 20s and 30s

As always, moving house means that you must sort, pack, then un-pack all of your worldly goods. Sometimes you come across items that you haven’s seen for a while, as I did with my precious ‘Delineater’ magazines from the 20s and 30s. It was with glee that found a group of 4 many years ago in a tiny out of town antique store, and I love them to bits, but I had carefully stored them away and had almost forgotten I had them!

As a designer, I adore Delineator cover art in all it’s elegant art deco simplicity and the wonderful fashions portrayed, so I thought I’d go on a hunt for some more online. For those unfamiliar to the magazine, Delineator (A Journal of Fashion, Culture, and Fine Arts) was launched in 1873 by Ebenezer Butterick – yes, that Butterick.  In the early 20s, the magazine published the work of romance novelists  and many famous illustrators worked on staff. The magazine later merged with William Randolph Hearst’s Pictorial Review in 1937.

Delineator 1927-12

The Delineator was originally a magazine of women’s fashion, with dressmakers patterns, as well as articles covering women’s issues, women in sport and in cultural life. In 1920, it hosted ‘more advertising than was ever inserted in any magazine published for women at any time, anywhere’, thanks to it’s 1 million readers and I believe it was published in many languages. Well, 4 of them found their way to a little store in country town Australia … so there you are!

I hope you enjoy these beautiful covers. I would never part with my copies.

Michelle’s Etsy pics of the week – 1920s dresses

Hi fellow vintage fashionistas. I am now settled in my new home and back on the interwebs, so time to get back to it and add an Etsy picks page to the blog, as one is well overdue. Today I’m looking at 1920s dresses and there are some lovely examples for sale at the moment on Etsy. From cotton day-wear to beaded evening frocks and wedding gowns – the variety is amazing.

Sometimes (with horror) I sit and wonder if there will ever come a day when there will be no more vintage clothes out there to find, as there certainly seems to be no end at the moment to the wonderful 1920s pieces that pop up at the moment. Hope you enjoy these pretties. I love geometrical designs on the collar of the navy blue dress from Jewels4pandas.

Style Me Vintage – Clothes…a new book

It occurred to me today that I had not posted about Naomi Thompson’s new book,“Style Me Vintage – Clothes”. The book is a very good basic guide to vintage clothing for those new to vintage collecting and wearing, covering decade by decade from the 1920s to 1980s. Great presentation and many of her own special tips included.

Inside you will find sections covering wearing, dating vintage clothing, caring for vintage, and where to shop for vintage. If you’re just beginning to get into vintage looks and need advice on styling etc then this is the book for you. Naomi has also listed all her favourite blogs, websites and online shops which is also very handy.

If you go to one of my favourite blogs Tuppence Ha’penny Vintage, you could win a copy of the book or you can purchase it at Vintage Secret.

Lounging pjs and lingerie – Sears 1934 catalogue

I haven’t been posting much as I’ve moved house and am waiting for my internet connection to be relocated…waiting, waiting…sigh. In the meantime, here is a lovely ad from Sears featuring some gorgeous Lounging Pjamas and cute lingerie. I love that the bra was called a ‘bandeau’ here. I would like the ‘Serona ensemble’ please in blue!

Portable phonographs – Sears 1934 catalogue

I have my very own early 30s gramophone and a tonne of swing 78s but it’s not very portable and I have always coveted one of these little rippers for picnics and vintage outings. Number 2 would be for me, with its faux alligator ‘Fabrikoid’  box. And a steal at $11.95 ($200US today). Something so well made would have been treasured in the day and it would have taken years to save up for … ahh if I only had a time machine and a shipping crate …

Whiting & Davis bags from the 20s and 30s

After spotting an original Whiting & Davis purse from the 1920s recently in an antique shop here in Perth, I decided I’d write a little blog about them as I see them pop up all the time on ebay and Etsy in some stunning designs. W & D were not the only company to make this type of mesh purse at the time, but I have found their designs to rather beautiful.

The Whiting and Davis Company, located in Plainville, Massachusetts is the oldest purse company in the US and is responsible for a great variety of exceptional mesh purses as well as other accessories. They made the first mesh bag in 1892.

By the 1920′s mesh bags were offered in a large spectrum of colors and fashionable designs, including enameled, fine meshed calledDresden mesh and pearlized enamel finishes. Fabulous enameled flat mesh purses, known as armored mesh, were offered in varied colors and a constant parade of unusual patterns. Most of the bags made from 1929 to 1932 were patterned by silk screening where the baby ring mesh took on a soft, hazy, romantic appearance much like a blurred water color. This technique was done by hand over several days by applying one color at a time and allowing 24 hours of drying between colors.

Here are some pics of lovely examples from the 20s and 30s that I have found online either for sale or in private collections. My fav is the one with the compact attatched.

Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries

Hi all, just wanted to let all my vintage loving friends know about a new series coming to Aussie TV.  Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries is a drama series of thirteen one-hour episodes, scheduled for airing on ABC1 on 24 February 2012. It is based on Australian author Kerry Greenwood’s series of Phryne Fisher detective novels. Kerry began writing  the Phryne Fisher books in 1989 and there are now 18 in the series. I have included some info from the website below:

Immerse yourself in the opulent, exciting world of Australia’s leading lady detective Phryne Fisher in Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries. Phryne (pronounced Fry-nee) is a glamorous and thoroughly modern woman of the 1920s. Our lady sleuth sashays through the back lanes and jazz clubs of Melbourne, fighting injustice with her pearl handled pistol and her dagger sharp wit. Leaving a trail of admirers in her wake, our heroine makes sure she enjoys every moment of her lucky life. But behind the façade of elegance and charm are the scars of the past which drive Phryne to find justice for those who can’t help themselves and to pursue the truth of her own dark history.

Australian TV (like British) generally does historical drama very authentically wardrobe-wise, so I am keen to see how this turns out. Just have to wait and see I guess. I am pretty picky though, which is a curse…haha. Looks fun regardless and I dare say that a lot of Melbourne’s great Art Deco buildings and sites will have been used when filming. I shall report back!

Swimwear from the 1920s, 30s and 40s

It’s summer here in Australia and the warm weather is perfect for the beach or lolling about in the shade with a good book dressed in wide linen trousers and a 1930s floppy hat. So dear reader, I thought I’d post a small collection of items from Glamoursurf, a store that specialises in vintage swimwear and accessories. GS has some gorgeous original vintage pieces from brands such as Jantzen, Victory Knitwear, Catalina and Gordon MacKay.

I have always loved the streamlined elegance of vintage swimwear and I wish that some of that glamour and sophistication would make it’s way back into today’s mainstream bathing collections en masse. And even if you can’t afford to purchase anything, you can simply admire and be inspired by these beauties. Included are suits from the 1920s to the 40s.

Vintage colour swatch: Rambunctious red

So, I thought I would do something fun and write a regular post every 2 weeks that focuses on a particular colour. I will also include pics showing all sorts of vintage fashion items that were produced in varying shades of that colour, hopefully to inspire some new outfit combinations in the future and some possible purchases.

Red: So many shades and varities. Crimson, fire-engine, scarlet, vermillion, cardinal, blood-red and the list goes on. I chose red today because it is a courageous colour and I have needed a lot of that in the last few days. I usually wear red when I am feeling confident and happy. Here are some amazing examples of red vintage/vintage inspired items. How gorgeous are the 30′s bias gowns – stunning! The black and red cloche is also breathtaking.

Sears catalogue 1934 – frocks

Fabulous Joan Bradley frocks from the 1934 Sears catalogue. My favourite is the brown polkadot number, a cute  jumper-style but made as a one piece frock. Very cute. It also came in navy, which would be my preference.

Michelle’s Etsy picks of the week – shoes

Hi all. I apologise for my lack of posts this past week, but I have been pre-occupied with some personal matters, so felt very uninspired. But, I am back with some pics of some of my current Etsy favourites this week. Today I am focussing on shoes from the 20s, 30s and 40s and there some amazing examples for sale at the moment.

I do adore shoes from the mid to late 30s but find it somewhat difficult to obtain them in my size (8.5) so I am forever looking, looking. However, during my daily searches I always make a note of the beautiful examples I find so that I can show others. I hope you enjoy these lovelies…and maybe some of them will fit you.

Farewell to my dear friend Paulie…

It’s been a hard week for myself and SF co-writer Sharon Davis. One of our dearest friends passed away very suddenly on Monday January 23rd at the young age of 32. Paul Verevis was my swing dance partner in a performance team for many years, fellow committee member for Perth Dance Society in the past, my Balboa partner and most of all; one of my closest friends.

Paul was liked by everyone who met him, not only here in Perth but all over Australia and the globe. He was one of those people who exuded happiness, warmth and joy, which is a rare thing these days. He was also a great dancer and loved the swing dance scene and all the friends and opportunities it brought him over the 10 years that we knew him. I’ve never known such a kind, generous, caring soul who was so full of fun and life and I will miss him terribly. Always smiling and joking around and never afraid to make fun of himself. I am so very glad to have had the time with him that I did.

I’ll never forget you Paulie. Love you always oxoxo

1930s Hair Styles

My interest in vintage hair began when I was a child, as I have always loved the 20s, 30s and 40s, but I actually began styling my own hair in vintage styles back 1999 when I started swing dancing. I have also run vintage hair workshops many times in the last 12 years. The 1930s softly waved and curled feminine hairstyles are my favourite and I drool over old pics from the time. I have a short middy cut myself so I can wear a 30s look when I want to. Sadly, ladies today don’t have the benefit of being able to go to the salon on a weekly basis to have their hair ‘wet set and styled’ as they did back in the day. The ‘beauty salon’ certainly was a different place back then. I once read in an old hairdressing magazine that around 50% of a salons’ business (from the 20s to the late 50s) came from ‘setting’ hair alone. Today it’s all about cut and colour.

Most of the waved and curled 30s styles required sculpting and constant upkeep. So wearing a hair net to bed with pin curls, wavers clips or rollers to maintain it was just part of every day life for ladies of the day, unless of course, you were lucky enough to have hair that waved or curled naturally and easily. Husbands and boyfriends back then certainly were used to seeing their ladies in curlers regularly. Was just part of life.

Women that could afford to go to the salon on a regular basis usually went for a ‘wet set and style’, which would last up to a week if you protected it while you slept. For those of you new to vintage hair speak, a wet set involved having your hair pin curled or finger waved in the style you wanted while the hair was wet, then sitting under a hood dryer for an hour or so at the salon, until the hair was completely dry. Then the hair would be brushed out and combed into the style required by the hairdresser. Certainly a lengthy process, but worth it for a week of hair that retained its style. This was a common practice right up until the 1960s in salons. Many ladies of the day (like my Nana and Grandmother) who weren’t flush with money, learned to style and set their own hair at home in the 30s, 40s and 50s for the most part and went to salon once a month.

Tips for 30s waves:
What many people don’t realise is that finger waves were actually designed to enhance, tame and smooth the waved, curly tresses of those lucky enough to have them. The waves and curls were stretched and moulded into the looks in the pics shown. But for those like myself who have dead straight hair (ugg) – I was given some invaluable tips a few years back from a lovely ex-hairstylist named ‘Lily‘ who is now in her 90s. This is how told me she used to set waves and curls for her straight-haired clients in the 30s:

- wet set hair with setting lotion under a hood dryer (or overnight) to give yourself a good curly base to work with
- THEN brush out the tight curls, smoothing the hair and relaxing it a bit
- use a styling comb to sculpt the curls on top and sides of your head  into soft waves and ridges and clip them into place with wavers (so much easier when the hair is already curled). It’s all about the sculpting.
- sculpt the smaller curls so they are softer around the back of your head/ears etc using the comb and your fingers. Spray on some hairspray to set.

So – curling first, drying, THEN waving for us straight haired lot! :) For years I wondered why trying to achieve soft finger waves was so much harder with straight hair … simple, because they were designed to beautify curly hair! So, salons of the day had to come up with techniques to help out the straight-haired gals like to me achieve these amazing styles too. Information has just been lost over the years as the older generation pass away. Anyhoo, here are some great style to inspire you. My fav 30s ladies are Carole Lombard, Myrna Loy and Ginger Rogers.

Vintage colour swatch: Tenacious teal

I will also include pics showing all sorts of vintage fashion items that were produced in varying shades of that colour, hopefully to inspire some new outfit combinations in the future and some possible purchases.

Teal: A lovely medium blue-green that reminds me of the sea off the islands of Perth and Thailand, cooler weather and rainy nights. As with my previous yellow post, I was inspired this week by a 1940s crepe, beaded gown that I have in my collection in a magnificent teal colour. Here are some beauties in various shades of teal. I think my favourite is the 1920s French opera coat…stunning.
