For a little inspiration, here’s a few recent photos of men’s fashion on the streets, with a retro vibe, from The Sartorialist.

Top Picks: Anna Sui Spring 2008 RTW
A brief flashback to Anna Sui’s Spring 2008 ready-to-wear collection, since it was such a great moment. A 1940s silhouette with cinched waists and boxy shoulders, brought to short flirty skirts and dresses, pinafores and playsuits in bright colors and bold prints. And I love the strappy platform heels, worn with brightly colored socks – cute!
I normally hate it when designers sent cute retro designs down the runway, paired with mismatching hairstyles and makeup, but in this case the punky ‘dos were adorable and played up the fun attitude of the collection. Bobby soxers meet Harajuku girls…

Fashion and All That Jazz – Sept 09 Harper’s Bazaar by Peter Lindbergh
Absolutely wonderful editorial in the September US Harper’s Bazaar, shot by Peter Lindbergh in Harlem, New York. The models are Chanel Iman and Arlenis Sosa, and you can see them in front of Harlem landmarks like the new Cotton Club, Sylvia’s Soul Food Diner and the Lenox Lounge. Bi-line reads “The fabulous 40s live on in gorgeous details, wonderful prints and all out glamour.” Need we say more?
The Blue Devils in crisp linen suits
The Blue Devils were a Kansas city jazz band in the 1920s and 30s, and above we have a photograph from 1932 of the saxophone section (Theo Ross and Buster Smith) welcoming their newest member, Lester Young, in the middle. For jazz fans, other big names that were in the band included Hot Lips Page, Bill ‘Count’ Basie and Jimmy Rushing. If you don’t know who any of those guys are, no problem – just look at how fine those 1930s suits are! Freshly pressed three-piece linen suits, and look at the details! Jazz orchestras knew how to dress. Perfectly matching down to the ties, the shoes, even the pocket handkerchiefs. And look closely, Lester is even holding a pipe.

1939 Jitterbugs in Color
I just posted this video up on my personal blog, where I was geeking out about the 1939 New York World’s Fair. But I thought the Swing Fashionistas might be interested in it also, because it’s color footage of everyday girls dancing in 1939. Enjoy!
